In 1847, a group of 1,490 people were forced to walk 165km from Strokestown, Co Roscommon along the banks of the Royal Canal to ships in Dublin where they boarded ships to Liverpool, and then onto famine ships bound for Quebec. Less than half who set off survived the journey.
