Bad news when a forecast looks like it should be in deg Farenheit, not deg Celsius. This is for Palm Springs, California today.

My initial reaction to seeing this forecast was, wow, I didn't know the time and location, I'd have thought it was in Celsius. I should have said that. As this post seems to have ticked people off. Not that it takes much to do so here.

Will Durant reminds us that people we consider to have lived during the Middle Ages thought of themselves as living in modern times, with the Middle Ages in their past. Likewise, people of the future may view today as part of what they call the Late Middle Ages: We are tempted

The Toronto storm may be the second heaviest one day rainfall on record, behind a 2013 storm that caused severe flooding + damage. This is why we have to prevent and prepare for climate change. Our cities wsren't designed for the current or future climate. cbc.ca/news/canada/to…

Great reporting on the bigger picture around Toronto's flooding from Nicole Mortillaro. The city was hit today by the double whammy of climate change + hardening of surfaces, leading to severe and rapid flooding. cbc.ca/news/canada/to…

The water level in the Don River (for Torontonians, the gauging station is near the Brickworks) jumped more than 3 m or 10 feet in a few hours, causing the flooding of the DVP.

Working on my Canadian Common CV, and thinking that hemorrhagic fever from dengue that nearly killed me and left me in a fog for a few weeks wasn't that bad.

Update: may take me as long to recover from filling out the CV. It should come with an IV, smelling salts, and one of those stress balls to squeeze.

I find that when you're tired and fading on a tough climb, especially one that is long planned, it is very hard to admit that you don't have the juice or the time to make the summit. Quitting is the obvious choice, but to the person climbing, it is so so hard to make that call.

If you'll be in NYC for Climate Week, I highly recommend getting tickets to this screening of the "The Here Now Project". It's unlike any other film about climate change - climatefilmfest.eventive.org/schedule/the-h…

How different the world would be if we could see carbon dioxide... like it was purple, so we all saw purple plumes from gas cars, gas furnaces and coal plants but not wind turbines, heat pumps and bikes, and we had to watch the sky get more purple each year.

This style is SO familiar to anyone who teaches, like a student who didn't do the assigned reading trying to answer a question.

Two pieces of advice for new grad students: 1. Pace yourself: This is a marathon. You can't sprint the whole way. Be thoughtful about your process and pace. 2. Remember why you're here (to learn and graduate): Side activities should support, not hinder, you in reaching that goal
