The second day of the Space+5 commercial astronaut training with AstroAccess and Bina48 at the University of Arizona pool included spacecraft egress and FULL conversations underwater in #ASL between Sheila Xu | Deaf Pilot | Aspiring Astronaut and Eric Shear 👏

We were so excited to partner with Uplift Aerospace and spaceplusnft in preparation for our flight in Houston next month! Ambassadors Eric Shear and Sheila Xu | Deaf Pilot | Aspiring Astronaut successfully completed an ASL experiment that is an extension of the research we did on Aurelia Institute Horizon!

Eric and Sheila are both certified scuba divers! They understood each other perfectly regardless of their orientation underwater! They were assisted by Enrico, Sheila’s husband, who is also Deaf and a certified scuba diver, so the entire experiment consisted of an all Deaf team!

We welcomed back deaf alumna, Sheila Xu | Deaf Pilot | Aspiring Astronaut '14! Sheila explored the art of capturing signs using multi-flash photography to create a unique blend of art and technology. Joined by fellow ASL enthusiasts from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the event was brimming with fun, nerdiness, and camaraderie.
