Out with students from Bournemouth Uni yesterday and caught this Mantis Shrimp (Rissoides desmaresti). This is a 'spearer' mantis shrimp that impales its prey on a barbed fore-limb. This type of shrimp is a.k.a. the 'Thumb Splitter' and must be handled with care...

Back in the West Country, working out of Plymouth with students taking the OceanEarthUniSoton Advanced Oceanography Fieldwork module. The onboard labs were briefly empty this afternoon, with everyone out on deck enjoying the sunshine.
RV Callista has just completed a messy week of mud sampling. University of Southampton students studying Biology and Marine Biology have been sieving through countless boxes of mud and identifying all the organisms they find. Pic 3 shows one of the worms, a Sand Mason.
Yesterday we had one of the best days for years, the sea was virtually flat and the Sun was blazing all day... University of Southampton students studying OceanEarthUniSoton subjects were onboard Callista doing fieldwork in the sun. Even the dolphins were unusually lazy in the afternoon.
