#JamesBarryDiary 31/12/1874 Last day of 1874 at long last and last night was about as cold as any came over us. We were drying and grinding, but we [had] only 2 grists. I got some better, but still I am not very well yet. I was in the shop all the afternoon repairing a fiddle.

#JamesBarryDiary 1/1/1875 Clear and very cold, and blowing a hurricane this 36 hours. It was so windy and cold that the folks about the settlement could not go to Pictou for rum. No fun of any kind round about these diggings this Christmas or New Year's today. I am not very spry.

#JamesBarryDiary 2/1/1874 Not so cold as yesterday, but still it was a clear cold winter day. The wind has got down at at [sic] last. A fearful time we had of it indeed. The boy doing the most of the grinding and drying today. I was not doing much of any consequence - not spry.

#JamesBarryDiary 4/1/1874 Something of a moderate day; not much cold at all. Calm and sunny most of the day. I was in the bookbinding shop, fixing fiddles and doing something at bookbinding also. I am not very spry yet, but still I am getting a little better.

#JamesBarryDiary 5/1/1875 Another beautiful day indeed, but a little something wintery. Bad roads, folks say. The boy at the mill and kiln and myself also in the forenoon, and in the afternoon. I was in the shop fixing old fiddles. Lots of snow on the ground now.

#JamesBarryDiary 6/1/1875 Extremely cold last night and all this day. All this day was clear. The boy and I was busy drying and grinding. Ground 10 bushels of wheat. Reading the newspapers most all this forenight, fore we get all our papers at once – bad arrangement.

#JamesBarryDiary 7/1/1875 Somewhat wintry but not so cold as yesterday. I was attending the mill and kiln all day, for the boy and William Sutherland (Ban) went off before at 10 A.M. and returned about 7 p.m. I am middling well, considering how I have suffered.

#JamesBarryDiary 8/1/1875 Dreadful stormy all day, snowing and blowing from the N.E. The boy and I were busy in the mill and kiln all day. It snowed a great pile, and in big banks. I am in middling trim, able to work in the mill pretty fair. All the rest are well. God be praised.

#JamesBarryDiary 9/1/1874 Somewhat of a moderate winter day, dark and not extra cold. We ground all our Oats toll today - 12 cwt. We made about 2½ Ton of meal out of this crop to date. The school marm was in the other end of the house all this forenight. All middling well.

#JamesBarryDiary 10/1/1875 Blew greatly most of last night and continues all this day. Snowed about 3 inches also, and sun shining all day and pretty cold indeed. The boy went down to John’s this forenoon, and no one here but ourselves, and all #middlingwell. Amen.

#JamesBarryDiary 11/1/1875 . Clear and as cold as any body could wish for. Only one grist of wheat came to the mill today – not a soul moving about at all. The boy is down at John's this forenight to get his chanter regulated. I am in middling good condition at present.

#JamesBarryDiary 12/1/1875 Clear and cold and windy. This is New Years Day, Old Style. There was some shooting at John McKay's. We ground a grist of Oats, and one of wheat, and a Barrel full of toll wheat for our selves, and I was bookbinding most of the afternoon.

#JamesBarryDiary 13/1/1875 Clear and cold again, but not so windy—scarcely any wind at all. I ground 4 ½ Bushel of wheat, and the boy dryed one grist of oats and I was Bookbinding most of the afternoon. My head is a little better this afternoon. All rest well.

The Dept. of Agriculture has been ordered to erase #climate data, leaving #farmers without key info on #droughts, #floods, & shifting seasons.
