With that, right now we are specifically talking about anti-Black racism, police brutality, and systematic racism that has been impacting our community since the transatlantic slave trade. This is not a new issue and we cannot pretend that it is. Be specific!

"We cannot, we must not, muffle the screams of those... who can only scream. They have no power, they have no money, they have no influence... their politicians have betrayed them, the police kill them. They must scream. So let us scream with them." Rev. Jeffrey @ #seattleprotest

A lot of people seem to take for granted that, by diversifying STEM, new people will come in and do the same science that's currently being done. This mindset has led many scientists to dismiss these efforts because, in their view, it shouldn't matter *who* is doing the science.

Earle Wilson (@eadoubleu) 's Twitter Profile Photo

But, the reality is that science is dictated by our collective interests, which on an individual level are shaped by our own experiences and (yes) culture. It follows then that diversifying science will also diversify the type of science we do and broaden the scope of our fields.

So promoting diversity in science is a lot more than just getting fresh faces. It's also about getting fresh perspectives that will ultimately bring us closer to serving the needs of everyone rather than a select few.
