I’m thinking of my friend Rep. Shaundelle Brooks today – an incredible survivor, advocate, and mother. Five years ago today, her son Akilah Dasilva was killed in the mass shooting at a Waffle House in Nashville, Tennessee. She’s been a powerful voice for change ever since.

Teaching should not be a life-threatening profession. Educators should not need to be armed to feel safe in the classroom. We must do more. I continue to call on Congress to pass common-sense gun safety laws to protect our kids and our teachers.
