The Gov will electrify HS2 and parts of East West Rail in a few years - my question here is, who will be left with the skills to do that and will we have to relearn them all over again.

What Signalling & Maintenance have said for years. White space in timetable is required for routine asset maintenance & patrol. Risk to front line teams exponentially driven up in line with quantum of trains. More trains @ higher speed = more maintenance yet less margins. Paradox

Okay, so I've attempted to update this as best as I can. It's just a draft, so do I dare ask for any feedback? Anything I've incorrectly marked as delivered or cancelled?

🎈 A former #signaller who spent nearly 50 years working on the railway was treated to a tour of York Rail Operating Centre as he celebrated his 99th birthday. He was able to see the differences in practices from his career to the modern era. Happy birthday Bob! #Railway200

A clear picture is finally arriving on the Open Access debate, and the apparent indecision from the DfT as to whether it’s good or bad. The ORR seemingly has adopted a common sense and common ground approach with this three-part list, which makes sense.

ITV pulling zero punches in this incredible footage - "This landscape of destruction looks otherworldy, but it's not, it's this world - What is happening may come to define one of its darkest eras, one that casts a stain on humanity, which will endure for generations" #Gaza

GBR Signage⁩ Birmingham International. #railalphabet2 backlit (legacy from VTWC days) but with the added excitement of a TfW Class 158 car stop marker included in the design. Systems thinking!

And the consequential changes to the operational rule book, control process, forecasting and technology which have all notably moved forwards since then, is a reminder that the railway can be very good at learning from its incidents; of which this was horrifically tragic.

We’ve collectively forgotten about Varamis, Orion, Royal Mail and various other start-ups, then. The railway now needs a study to decide how to do something which it has always done. When we had things called brake vans, HST power cars and DVTs, we also did this quite well.

For once, one of these has set the world alight metaphorically, and not literally. 🔥 Good work at GWR - Adrian Shooter would surely approve.
