🧵 1. It’s hard to stay connected to the bigger picture amid media coverage hiding the genocide beneath domestic controversies and politicians’ talking points.

And the state is working on both sides of the “aisle” to further criminalize and endanger people they deem mentally ill, and to make it worse they claim it is “care”. Nearly A Third Of LAPD Shootings Since 2017 Involved A Person In A Mental Health Crisis laist.com/news/criminal-…

NOlympics LA , look at “city leaders 🤢”sell out their own communities. I wonder how much promised money and power it took for them to forget about the people that they will be displacing once gentrification hits this area.

Not surprisingly @LATimes lets cops and corporate interests dictate the narrative on Prop 36. Their debunked claims ignore diverse opposition as cops' budgets and corporate subsidies flourish. Focusing on poverty and homelessness as drivers of crime only fuels carceral expansion.

The pro prop 36 camp has suddenly changed their message and are claiming their mass incarceration prop is about “treatment”. It would literally defund treatment. These mendacious goofies are understanding what we already know. Voters don’t want more state violence.

Proponents of prop 36 deceptively call their program a "treatment mandated felony" but it does nothing to fund, lengthen, or improve drug treatment as necessary. The truth is, under prop 36, our loved ones will die from withdrawals while serving their felony sentence.

It’s disheartening to see Black orgs co-signing Prop 36, which will undo Prop 47, without doing their own research. Orgs eager to align with politicians don’t understand or don’t care about the harm they are doing to our communities by spreading the misinformation. Do better.

An op-ed in the Sacramento Observer by Eric Harris of DRC highlights the failings of Prop 36. This measure, called the "Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act," increases punishments for unhoused individuals without funding for treatment or housing.

We must heed DRC's insights and oppose policies like Prop 36 that prioritize punishment over community support. Our focus should be on uplifting vulnerable populations and investing in solutions that promote healing and justice. Full article here: sacobserver.com/2024/09/opinio…
