As a nurse myself, I warmly welcome all the new nursing students who started their training this year. I am also pleased that the UCAS data released today shows growth this year in the number of new nursing students in England.

The number of nursing students being accepted onto courses has increased by 130 compared to 2023, and by more than 1,100 compared to pre-pandemic. The number of school and college leavers being accepted onto courses also increased by more than 1,000 since then too.

Expanding the number of registered nurse degree apprenticeships will also allow our amazing healthcare support workers and nursing associates to take the step into registered nurse training.

NHS England will also be working closely with the Government to develop a refreshed NHS workforce plan next summer, as well as taking action right now to support the educator workforce and promote NHS careers.
