Juvenile justice reforms like the Child Interrogation Protection Act have made our system more efficient, rehabilitative, and humane. They have NOT increased crime or made it more difficult for cops to do their jobs. Protecting our the rights of our kids is WORTH IT!

“When I was 16, I was remanded to Rikers with $1,500 bail, set by a judge who wanted to teach me a lesson. Three days later, I was stabbed four times.” I’m eager to hear your thoughts about this op-ed. The author and I are very close. nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-ope…

Let's focus on facts instead of myths when it comes to public safety. Here is a shocking statistic from the first-ever national survey on victims' views on safety and justice conducted by @SafeAndJustUSA.

“Law enforcement needs to do what they can do, prosecutors need to do what they can do, parents, DJS, DSS needs to do what they can do. Not one entity should put their hands in the air and say, ‘there’s nothing I can do’.” Yes! THANK YOU Sen. Jill P. Carter Emerita! foxbaltimore.com/news/local/sen…

“Should Rockville allow 16-17 year-olds to vote in city elections?” 71% of Voters: Nah “I just don’t think they’ve got maturity or knowledge at that age” Reminder that for 30+ offenses, 16-17 year-olds are AUTOMATICALLY charged as adults. marylandmatters.org/2023/11/08/uno…

The BPD release feels like a mirror image of much of the local news coverage right now. Kids = <10% of arrests, and Kids = 80% of news stories about crime We can and should be concerned about youth crime without implying that youth are driving crime trends.

So much of the narrative on youth crime is rooted in the myth that the system is too lenient. Grace's story told the unfortunate truth: the opposite is true, especially for kids of color. Bravo to Michigan for these changes & Grace, Jodi Cohen & ProPublica for sharing the story

Important leadership from Bill Ferguson. We can & should be concerned about safety while insisting on the truth about reforms. “The idea that police officers cannot talk to children when they’re trying to gather facts for a crime — that’s not true. It is just simply not true,”
