It was a real pleasure to do this Generating Buzz podcast on the role of social media in youth mental health. Steven Gagliano at Georgia Tech Institute Communications asked all the important questions on this topic!
Many congratulations Kiran Garimella!! Incredibly well deserved!! It is always a delight to learn of your bold, innovative research :)
Summer has been busy for various reasons, but I can't be happier to see Dr. Sachin Pendse graduate from SocWeB Lab at Georgia Tech and proceed to do amazing things next, first Northwestern and then as a faculty UC San Francisco! Lucky to have shared a passion for mental health with this PhD graduate #6 😀
When we think about safe reporting guidelines (for suicide), we consider what should or shouldn't be said. Our new paper shows that even missing info, e.g., the victim's sociodemographic identity, can have harmful and stigmatizing effects. More below from lead author Jay Foriest!
Looking forward to this International Association for Suicide Prevention IASR SuicideResearch panel and talking about AI and suicide prevention! Webinar on Jul 18 (details below)
Congratulations to the #7 (newly minted) Doctor of SocWeB Lab at Georgia Tech — Seunghyun Kim! Matt’s thesis is a great example of those wanting to do impactful human-centered AI/ML work. And of how data donation strategies may help overcome dwindling access to public social media data
Incredibly proud advisor moment: Shravika Mittal is one of 50 students from across the Quad (US, India, Australia, Japan) and Southeast Asian countries to be recognized as a Fellow! I can’t wait to see the amazing, impactful research she’ll continue to do SocWeB Lab at Georgia Tech Georgia Tech School of Interactive Computing!

I had so much fun talking with Ebrahim Bagheri about everything behind-the-scenes for faculty life. I wholeheartedly recommend junior scholars to follow the high quality content (beyond this one!) Ebrahim Bagheri is producing about academia and the life around it!
