Yesterday at RAF Valley, I awarded Wings and silver sixpences to sew behind them to our newest batch of fighter pilots in the Royal Air Force. A moving ceremony for all - it is a key highlight in any fighter pilot’s career.

Today at Abercarn Fire Station, I met new recruits on the first weekend on call course. This new approach allows recruits, unable to take time off midweek, to complete weekend training to join SWFRS as on call firefighters in addition to normal jobs. Graduation day today at Cardiff Gate Training Centre. A fabulous display of the firefighting skills was put on for the families and visitors. I was honoured to take the salute from the graduating course and present graduation certificates and prizes.

Today I visited Malpas Red Watch, did RTA training and went up Maindee Red Watch’s Aerial Ladder Platform. Malpas was called out the Fire Control Team. The speed of response and professionalism of our personnel keep our communities safe 24/7. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service Welsh Government

On Monday I met up with our highly skilled and specialised Fleet and Engineering Team who maintain our fire appliances, vehicles and other fire and rescue equipment. They play a vital role in maintaining the operational readiness of the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

I was delighted to officiate at the reopening of Treorchy Fire Station following refurb alongside the Mayor of Rondda Cynon Taf and with Commissioner Vij Randeniya. We also celebrated that Watch Manager Simon Bound has been serving in SWFRS for over 39 years.
