Walking my kids to/from play dates today had me thinking about how much higher my family’s quality of life is due to living in a walkable place with a neighborhood school. All of my kids’ friends live within a few blocks of our home. 1/3

The winds have started shifting in Indian cities compared to a decade ago towards creating streets for people. But it is not strong enough and there is a long way ahead! Sharing data points of impacts and this article incase it comes handy for those championing the cause.

Investing in cycling infrastructure isn't just investing for avid cyclists. It means investing in a network thru which people of all ages and abilities, with different types of vehicles, can participate in daily life indepently!

Not everyone can/wants to own a car/safely drive one. Not everyone can/wants to walk, bike or roll for transportation. Not everyone can/wants to take transit. When we ensure all modes are relatively safe, comfortable & efficient, people have freedom to choose for themselves.

In cities such as Amsterdam, car dominance is treated not as a problem to be solved but as a potential to be realized. And when the decision is reached to reverse that supremacy and fulfill that promise, the results are absolutely magnificent. Platange Middenlaan. 1987 vs 2024.

Permitting motorists to turn right on a red light at most urban and suburban intersections is deadlier for pedestrians. We’ve known this for 40 years.

Whenever you cycle in Amsterdam, you are riding on the shoulders of giants… Tens of thousands of citizens who, decades ago, took to the streets to fight back against the rampant rise of the car in their community. Without this defiant act, their city would look like any other.

Amsterdam’s status as a cycling paradise was never a given. Residents had to fight for it. To paraphrase Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the city. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Museumplein. 1978 vs 2024.

“To build a truly ‘smart’ city, we must prioritize the health of our natural environment—and in turn, ourselves. But first, it demands a fundamental shift in how we view our place in the world—recognizing that we are not separate from nature but a part of it.” - Dr. Nadina Galle
