I once spent a wonderful night with Pete Shelley on the streets of Bangkok. We borrowed guitars of a street performer and he and my son sang until the sun came up.

Sadly yes. The BBC got so excited by early pcs they commissioned their own the BBC microci outer from acorn. It looked like that show too - nothing beats an orange light on a flat to say 'high-tech'.
I edited interactive shows back in the mid 80s initially on a tape based system called Felix and later on video disk. They were all much worse than this. It's just not something the world needs as it kills all immersion in the show.
