Of all the commentary out there about what Labour can learn from its past I particularly recommend this excellent podcast series

More lessons for the new Labour government in my new SPERI @SPERIshefuni.bsky.social podcast with Mems! This time on parliamentary reform with Meg Russell of UCL, former adviser to Robin Cook. Great stuff (if I can say that).

How radical can the Starmer government be? On my new SPERI @SPERIshefuni.bsky.social podcast with Mems ‘Lessons in power’, the brilliant Geoff Mulgan offers a wealth of advice on how to bring about real change. This is the craft of government. Worth a listen.

Our Director, Meg Russell, was a special adviser to Robin Cook as Leader of the Commons in the early 2000s. On this SPERI @SPERIshefuni.bsky.social podcast she discusses the work of the 1997 Modernisation Committee and why "good scrutiny leads to good government" 👉 shows.acast.com/speri-presents….

For those for whom 8,000 words is too many but 140 too few, may I offer the Goldilocks version of my Political Quarterly annual lecture - and journal article - on post-neoliberal economic policy. My conclusion is that… sorry I’ve run out of space. You’ll have to read it. @politicalquarterly.bsky.social

We urgently need to reform this short-termist fiscal framework so that our public finances can be truly sustainable. There are lots of suggestions out there from the likes of Institute for Government , National Institute of Economic and Social Research , CETEx (Centre for Economic Transition Expertise) , IPPR , NEF Hopefully govt looks seriously at these.

Missed Michael Jacobs's incredible lecture last Autumn, 'After Neoliberalism: Economic Theory and Policy in the Polycrisis'? The #DigestedRead is now available, summarising his argument in just 2000 words. Don't miss it: politicalquarterly.org.uk/blog/after-neo…

"As we confront in the polycrisis... we need to acknowledge that it is not just a new set of economic policies which is needed, but a whole new theoretical foundation for them" The #DigestedRead of Michael Jacobs's lecture 'After Neoliberalism': politicalquarterly.org.uk/blog/after-neo…

What a lazy, cliched analysis this is! I stopped being an adviser to Gordon Brown 15 years ago. I am a professor of political economy at the University of Sheffield who analyses policy not through the lens of Labour disagreements of 15-25 years ago but from what I see now.
