Why teach commutativity using number rods ? ✅Deeper understanding of how multiplication works. ✅ ‘sticky’ learning. CPA ✅ Proof of commutativity #Numicon #OUPPrimary

Last week Y6 enjoyed using Numicon to help them understand and calculate ratio. The visual representation created a lot of lightbulb moments. 5:6 “For every 5 yellow counters there are 6 red ones” “The whole is 11 as both parts of the ratio add up to 11” Maths at Bartons Primary School #numicon

Year 4 using a number line with positive and negative numbers. Aim of the game is the first to get to -20 or +20. Good opportunities to discuss the magnitude of numbers. 👏🏼

Some great concrete exploration of multiplying decimals in Year 6 today. 3 representations, all used by the children to explain how they multiply decimals. Numicon Maths at Bartons Primary School #maths #cpa #numicon

‘Find the difference between 2 numbers’ We explored the structure of subtraction using number rods and track. As we became more confident we showed the difference using number lines and bar models. 👏🤩#OUPPrimary #Numicon #CPA #vocabulary

Active Maths Day. Year 4 Learning that arrays can be split into different parts to make it easier to calculate. Next stop - short written method of multiplying. #teachactive #Numicon #OUPPrimary #CPA

Revision of multiplying fractions by integers in Year 6 today. Using Numicon helps the children visualise the concept so that they can better understand how/why the abstract works. Maths at Bartons Primary School #maths #ks2 #year6 #numicon

Equivalence in Yr 4. Fill a 20 shape with four different colours in equal amounts. 5/20 is equal to 1/4 . Tip -check by putting 1 peg for every 5 shape.👍 #OUPPrimary #Numicon

This years theme for Maths week is ‘Maths in everyday life’. Year 4 have been investigating tessellation they see around them. The challenge was to make their own shape that tessellated. #OUPPrimary

Year 4 are working on becoming fluent with short written multiplication. Using manipulatives builds a deeper understanding of the concept, this leads to and supports fluency. Well done Year 4 . Division next 👏👏

Year 4 tackled short division this week. Lots of time spent exploring what ‘sharing’ and ‘grouping’ means. Tricky concepts to understand and use. Year 4 persevered, collaborated and used manipulatives to explain their thinking. 👏👏#OUPPrimary #Numicon
