Does the culture you grow up in shape the way you see the world? In a new Psych Review paper, Chaz Firestone & I tackle this centuries-old question using the Müller-Lyer illusion as a case study. Come think through one of history's mysteries with us🧵(1/13):

Are humans still evolving? A new study looks at natural selection in modern Americans. It finds that genes associated with educational attainment are being selected against, while genes associated with depression, asthma, and earlier first birth are being favored. [Link below.]

"Greater awareness of mental health problems risks encouraging self-diagnosis and the pathologizing of commonplace emotions... Instead of 'I am nervous about X,' a teenager might say 'I can't do X because I have anxiety' - a reframing that research shows undermines resilience."

Guys, unless you're really hot, you're probably wasting your time on Tinder As a classic Medium post explained, “the bottom 80% of men are fighting over the bottom 22% of women and the top 78% of women are fighting over the top 20% of men.” [Link below.]

New, hot-off-the-presses! Delighted to share this new paper about why the ubiquitous "Evolution vs. Learning" dichotomy is the wrong way to think about things. Out now in American Psychologist (APA Journals). The paper avoids the boring, underspecified claim that "both matter"

Don't trust anything scientifically illiterate people say. The mortality salience literature is probably the biggest mess in psychology. It is immediately clear if you read any of the original articles. For the recent final spasms: x.com/lakens/status/…

I just became president of a scientific society and my first act was to disagree with one of my heroes...Arie Kruglanski gave a keynote arguing social psychology needs MORE Big Beautiful Theories. I think that's exactly backwards. Here's why...

I think the idea women aren't aggressive is mostly a myth. Rather, what matters is the kind of aggression: physical (violence) or social, direct or indirect, and the context in which is occurs (war, social, resource, or status etc.).

"Testosterone often declines with age, raising the risk of all these problems. But it doesn’t necessarily decline much if you keep active, fit, and healthy. In fact, it barely declines at all in some traditional societies, because men stay active into old age." [Link below.]
