🌊This morning, MSF International rescue vessel Geo Barents left the port of Naples, finally free to sail after 60 days in port imposed by a politically motivated double detention. The vessel will waste no time in reaching the Central Mediterranean, where it's most needed.

Another tragic shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea ⬇️

‼️MSF team witnessed another tragedy this morning while arriving to rescue people in distress on a deflating rubber boat, with armed men on a fast boat in their close vicinity. Survivors reported that 29 women and children had been intercepted at gunpoint before our arrival.

🚨Yesterday, MSF team faced a critical rescue operation. Armed men forcibly took away women and children at gunpoint to return them to Libya, separating families. 70 people jumped into the water from an unseaworthy rubber boat and were rescued by our team. Don't miss this🎥👇

The 83 men and boys rescued on the 28th safely disembarked today in Reggio Calabria. However, the 29 women and girls traveling with them faced a different fate. Armed men forcibly took them back to Libya, tearing families apart.

❗The protracted violence at sea against people on the move is reaching unacceptable levels. Separating families and forced returns should not pass with impunity. We urge Italian authorities to investigate and sanction the actions of armed actors they allegedly support.

🟢 RESCUE COMPLETED This morning, all 45 people, including unaccompanied children, rescued on Wednesday have finally set foot in Taranto. May they find a warm welcome and the protection they deserve after their ordeal.
