How much do increases in soil organic matter affect soil water holding capacity? Many numbers are being thrown around, see below. A 2017 paper looked at 50,000 measurements globally and concluded: "the increase in organic carbon in soil has a small effect on soil water content."

A meta-analysis...Do cover crops benefit soil microbiome? Yes, they increase soil microbial abundance, activity, and diversity. Good to know. My question, do these changes this matter? The crucial benefit of cover crops is reducing erosion. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Excited to officially start with Constellation Brands today as the Regional Viticulturist for the Central Coast. I have greatly enjoyed working collaboratively with Constellation in my career, and am very excited to join the team.

Farms -- including orchards and vineyards -- can be beautiful this time of year. But, remember, the land may be private property. Pesticide applications could also be occurring. Look, but don't enter!

To improve soil health (increase soil organic matter?), you have to minimize erosion. But you can minimize erosion without increasing soil health. For long-term production, minimizing erosion is more important and probably easier in many situations.

And this: "Biology is only one factor more, not the "driver' of Soil Health. Soil Health does not rotate around biology however much microbiologists would like to believe otherwise from a professional and financial (grant funding) perspective." !

Not cool leaving Hillsdale a solid minute early Caltrain, while we ran and pounded on doors to open as the 2:49 pulled away at 2:48. On days there are concerts at Oracle, you’d think you’d run like you should.
