New launch: RFN and RRI - Rights and Resources Initiative are thrilled to launch the #PathtoScale dashboard—an open-source online tool giving access to donor funding data for the first time for Indigenous Peoples’ and local communities’ rights and forest guardianship. 🧵 regnskog.no/en/news/increa…

An analysis of the dashboard’s data finds that although funding between 2020–2023 was up 36%—averaging US $517 million per year. Most of this increase, 72 %, was driven by the US$1.7 bn IPLC Forest Tenure Pledge from #CoP26 in 2021.

The new brief - “State of Funding for Tenure Rights and Forest Guardianship” - updates the data and analysis from “Falling Short”, which gave the first numbers on donor funding for IPs and LCs. regnskog.no/en/news/fallin…

While funding for communities remains primarily driven by bilateral and multilateral sources, with the latter accounting for 42% of total disbursements in 2023, private foundations increased their funding from 8% to 17% of total disbursements.

There is still no evidence of systematic change in direct donor funding to rightsholder organizations.  Community-led organizations continue to receive most of the funding indirectly through NGOs, conservation organizations and tailored small grant schemes.

More support and direct funding is needed, as countries with large areas of unrecognized land still receive little funding. New rightsholder-led funds, such as the #Poodali and #Nusantara funds, can only support a small share of the needs of their communities.

Increased support for #Indigenous peoples and local communities is crucial for the Global Biodiversity Framework #GBF and the 30*30 target, as they are custodians of large areas of intact tropical rainforest that is better protected when rights are recognized.

By making this data available, the dashboard will help donors, NGOs, and rightsholders identify critical funding gaps and opportunities in global efforts to secure communities’ rights and combat the dual #climate + #biodiversity crises. Learn more: dashboard.pathtoscale.org
