The first Government Printer in South Australia was Robert Thomas, appointed #0TD 4 Jan 1837. His Stanhope Press was ready to go - in a hut of water rushes near the Patawalonga. He had already printed 100 copies of the Governor's Proclamation a week before. On #KaurnaCountry.

An ugly ‘pitched battle’ between police and protesting workers arose in Adelaide #OTD 9 January 1931. The ‘beef riot’ occurred outside the Treasury Building. The Adelaide Botanic Garden gained a spectacular attraction when 'the pride of the city' was opened #OTD 22 Jan 1877. The Palm House was imported from Germany in pieces (but all the glass shattered en route). A heritage symbol of an economic boom era. On #KaurnaCountry.

A tragic day for #Adelaide city designer Col William Light. #OnThisDay 22 Jan 1839, his hut on North Tce burned down. Much of his personal history and our colonial detail went up in smoke. He slept in thedairy of his incomplete 'Theberton Cottage'. On #KaurnaCountry.

Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, was named after Cap. Dirk Hahn. On the Zebra, he brought Old Lutheran dissidents to ‘freedom of religion’ Adelaide. Checking good country for them in the hills #OTD 25 Jan 1839 he climbed Mt Barker. On #PeramangkCountry

From salty swamp to ‘best Real Estate project in the world’, the West Lakes development scored a breakthrough #OTD 8 Feb 1968. The Advertiser reported Premier Dunstan saying it would be almost entirely residential. Legislation would follow. On #KaurnaCountry.

Vote for Bill! An early and critical stoush in Adelaide. Gov Hindmarsh kept hassling Col Lignt to shift his site for the capital closer to the coast, but #OTD 10 Feb 1837 an historic public meeting of landholders voted clearly for Light’s site on the Torrens. On #KaurnaCountry.

A simmer storm claims a sailing ship.The 3 masted barque Zanoni loaded with 4025 bags of wheat left Pt Wakefield #OTD 11 Feb 1867 and soon hit a fierce squall and sank. No lives lost. The wreck was only found in 1983. Permit for diving required. Relics at Ardrossan Museum.

Charles Sturt sighted the Southern Ocean #OTD 11 Feb 1830, completing an epic charting journey down the Murray. He was disappointed to see its mouth would not be navigable. A 1930 monument on Hindmarsh Is. marks the moment. On #NgarrindjeriCountry.

One of Adelaide’s heritage jewels, the 1884 Mortlock Chamber was named in the ‘top 20 most beautiful libraries of the world’ by a US mag. After a national award winning restoration, it was re-opened #OTD 12 Feb 1986. On #KaurnaCountry.

The troopship Karoola arrived at Outer Harbor #OTD 13 Feb 1919, bringing home about 500 South Australian soldiers from World War I. Some had been away for more than 4 years. Gen Monash estimated that he had to repatriate 180,000 Australians from Europe. Moving pics from State Library of South Australia.

Did you know the Adelaide Agricultural and Horticultural Show was held in Botanic Park for a half century? Its first show there opened #OTD 14 Feb 1844. It graduated from marquees to is own Exhibition Building there in 1860. On #KaurnaCountry.

Wish Roy Rene ‘Happy Birthday ‘ when you pass his statue in Hindley St. #Adelaide today. He was born nearby #OTD 15 Feb 1891. His comedy character Mo was famous round Australia on stage and radio for decades. His 2010 statue is by Robert Hannaford. On #KaurnaCountry.
