Recumbent lions were found across the South Temple precinct (of Pnepheros and Petesouchos) at Karanis, too: “Almost immediately 3 stone lions found, one laid on its side under pavement level, just by S. wall, & just W. of Vespasian’s Gate” (D.G. Hogarth, 12/24/1895).

Spent another morning in the Kelsey archives, and was amazed to learn that the handwritten record of excavated objects notebooks from the first season name the Egyptian staff who dug each context. This information does not survive in the digital version I usually consult.
