Grindr Since 22 Dec 2023, access to Asia Sentinel website has been blocked in Malaysia on: - TM (AS4788 and AS38322) - Digi (AS4818) - Maxis (AS9534) - Time (AS9300) - Celcom (AS10030) Source: explorer.ooni.org/chart/mat?prob…

We are currently lacking measurements from Celcom, U Mobile, Yes and Digi users. If you subscribe to any of these providers, running the test on your mobile will help in gathering the evidence of censorship, if any.

Asia Sentinel has been blocked before for covering Sarawak Report posts on 1MDB in 2016. Blocking was removed in 2018, but it is now blocked again since end of last year for unexplained reasons by MCMC.

Today, Mentega Terbang’s legal team argued that Section 298 violates freedom of expression & association under the Constitution. Interestingly, this law was created pre-Merdeka & pre-Constitution. The decision to refer the case to the High Court will be announced on 14 June. 🤞🏼

If the gov themselves admit its self-censorship, then the onus is on them to explain why they believe this to be the case and suggest remedies to ensure that the media feel safe to report on sensitive issues. Otherwise the government looks ignorant on its influences on the media.

MCMC took down an FB post critical of the involvement of a minister's husband in a state government project because it "cyber bullied" the minister. Lol malaysiakini.com/news/708053

⚠️Censorship Update: Malaysian ISPs Maxis and Time are implementing transparent DNS proxy on Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) and Google (8.8.8.8) public DNS servers, users are no longer able to use these alternative DNS servers to access websites blocked by MCMC imap.sinarproject.org/news/internet-…

This is a terrible precedent. The government is going to get bit in its own arse with this. They're taking the wrong action to tackle the issue. If the ISPs mess with TLS, they're basically breaking trust. We can no longer safely do banking, commerce, etc online.

Hadi Azmi (@amerhadiazmi) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Communication Minister said the request to block the site went straight to the ISP and that it “didn’t go through MCMC”. This raises the question of whether each ministry can “request” ISPs to block any sites they deem fit.

Kelly Koh (@k_ellyk) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Isn’t this ultra vires? It’s setting a dangerous precedent if all ministries can direct ISPs to block websites, and that kinda makes MCMC’s function as a regulator redundant.

If I was a scammer at <xyz>.com and it got blocked, it costs <$10 to create <xyz1>.com and be back online in minutes. The only ones adversely impacted by a DNS block are **legit** sites - who are unwilling to move to a different domain. Illegal biz aren't afraid of DNS bans.

While using OONI Probe is the best option for detailed testing, sometimes users just want quick answers to check if a site is currently blocked in Malaysia. Preview of simple service to quickly check if a site is on ISP DNS block list (at least TMNet) h/t Choon-Siang Lai

A well researched and written article. The damage has already been done. The only question is how bad it will be. I stand by my statement that only legitimate sites will be adversely impacted. Baddies aren't afraid of DNS blocks. straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/d…
