"The tradition among American Presidents is: Speak softly and carry a big stick. Do your homework first, think about what you wanna say, and then demand to be taken seriously."

Amidst all of the chaos of the present economic moment, remember the Trump Administration still says that it's all about creating deals. But how would that, or could that even work right now? (Hint: Ask yourself, what's in it for other countries?)

"Getting rid of USAID is a very easy way of winning headlines... But if your one accomplishment in government is to rip funds away from the neediest, so that they can die, so they can be unmedicated, so that they can starve, that is a moral stain that I hope will haunt you 'til

The President's tariff over-reach forced the (American) courts to rule against him, which in turn has severely undermined America's bargaining power in trade negotiations. It's (another) pointless unforced error from an Administration that won't think before it acts.

The trade war is wildly asymmetric. Remember: Way way way back (in January), most countries charged tariffs of ~2% on U.S. goods. So the risks we're taking are huge, but the best possible deal we might strike yields only minimal benefits.

After all the legal challenges, where will the trade war go next? I'm betting this movie is more like the Terminator, than the Wizard of Oz.

Sad to hear of the passing of Stan Fischer, who was not only a great economist, but perhaps the greatest teacher of economic talent this century. (His nearest rivals may be his own dissertation advisers, Samuelson and Solow.) finance.yahoo.com/news/stanley-f…

Let's dig into what all of the tariff-related court cases over the past couple of days are all about, and why they're unlikely to spell the end of Trump's trade wars.

On Tuesday Kevin Hassett said "we'll probably see a few more trade deals, a few more [trade] deals even this week," and "there's some stuff very close to being finished, and it's up to the President." It's Sunday, and the score card says he got to zero.

There's a lot of day-to-day economic noise. But to keep your eye on what really matters, ask yourself: What makes some countries rich, and others poor? And keep your eyes on those factors, because they're the ones that'll really matter in the long run.

When Washington imposes tariffs on the European Union, that's Washington undermining the competitiveness of *American* companies. Let's unpack why.

Do you think the random doubling of tariffs on steel -- sourced from any country -- on a Friday afternoon might somehow disrupt negotiations with any of those dozens of countries that were attempting to negotiate in good faith with the U.S.?

Would a government that is earnestly in good faith trade talks with dozens of valued trading partners unilaterally double tariffs on steel -- from all countries -- on a Friday afternoon?
