EU proceeding with increasing tariffs on Russian and Belarusian fertilizers. Below charts shows how many tons flowed to the EU from those locations over the years This is going to be tough on EU farmers and will disrupt global trade patterns...

It is not the biggest trade deal ever. As it actually diminishes trade. It’s the worst trade deal ever - after the UK-EU trade agreement which also diminished trade.. very bad day for the EU.

I think the only positive thing that can he said is that it could have been worse. Early EU business reaction is of grim relief.

Where do you get that figure from? This trade deal actually restricts trade - it imposes tariffs and penalises exporters, importers and consumers. It is the opposite of what trade deals normally do which is to improve terms of trade and reduce barriers!

The EU’s demand ought to have been to match the US-UK deal with a tariff of 10% instead of 15%. EU has a much bigger market to offer US exporters. 15% - and with uncertainties about pharma - feels like a negotiating failure.

This analysis, from the CCPC report on grocery prices tells quite a story. Shows that average food prices in 2024 was 1% higher than 2008 levels, lagging way behind other countries. The EU average increase? 58%. Hard to figure why media coverage constantly overlooks this

At first glance the EU has offered preferential market access for US only agricultural exports, thus breaching its international WTO obligations. V v bad precedent.

🟥2💰A 20% budget CUT for the CAP ! Agriculture is on the frontline of climate, economic & geopolitical crises, yet the Commission slashes support to <15% of the EU budget. The Commission’s approach is purely and simply a strategic and historic misstep.
