Guest post: How to minimise the risks from overshooting the 1.5C limit | Carl-Friedrich Schleussner G Joeri Rogelj Read here: buff.ly/3Uqgyn1

🌡️ "Overshoot comes with irreversible consequences for people and ecosystems, such as species extinction, and the world we return to will be different from the one we failed to safeguard," say IIASA's Carl-Friedrich Schleussner, Gurav Ganti, and Joeri Rogelj in a new The Conversation

Countries should not include forests, soils and oceans in their net zero targets if they want to reverse global warming, a new study co-authored by Professor Joeri Rogelj Imperial College London warns 🧵 Read more: ow.ly/20LV50U9c6z #COP29

Co-author of the study Prof. Joeri Rogelj explains why distinguishing between nature-based CO2 removal (forests and oceans) and active removal (carbon capture tech.) is so important to reach #NetZero👇

Explainer: Why some countries are aiming for ‘net-negative’ emissions | Daisy Dunne w/comment from Joeri Rogelj @dmreinercamb #CBarchive Read here ➡️ buff.ly/4fmxsdO

2024 saw global temperatures hit 1.6°C above preindustrial levels, surpassing the 1.5°C target Prof Joeri Rogelj & Dr Dr Friederike Otto warn every fraction of a degree brings more harm. Urgent action to cut emissions and transition from fossil fuels is critical theguardian.com/environment/20…

By February countries are expected to submit "fair and ambitious" pledges (NDCs) for 2035 to the Paris Agreement. A new paper, co-authored by Joeri Rogelj, provides a blueprint to provide greater transparency around countries' climate pledges. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.108…

In a new study in Nature Communications, we look at how we can allocate the global warming space instead of carbon budgets and translate it to warming-equivalent emissions budgets. If you want to read more or engage on this, please connect via BlueSky: bsky.app/profile/joerir…

A new paper from Drew Shindell & Joeri Rogelj shows that using carbon dioxide removal for anything other than "hard to abate" emissions & overshoot would make achieving net-zero emissions impossible. There can be no "decarbonizing oil" with direct air capture, in other words.
