Public transportation doesn’t need to be profitable Nobody demands that public schools, libraries, or fire departments are profitable We understand that these things are an investment in the well-being of our society Public transportation is an investment, not a cost

Imagine: You’re in your mid-30s, doing mid-30s things. One day, you get sick. You almost die, & it doesn’t go away. You’re now disabled. Other people report dying & becoming disabled by the same illness, while still others accuse the sick of lying. It’s chaos for a time.

We are devasted by this news. Grant Wahl's contribution to the soccer community, especially women's soccer, cannot be measured. The beautiful game is better because of him. Grant will be incredibly missed.

Cities aggregate people, resources and talent. Cities bring us public goods like beautiful libraries, train stations, promenades and markets. Cities are one of humanity’s greatest inventions and we can make them even better in the 21st century.

We need a pedestrian bill of rights. Every choice of the automobile industry wrt size, weight & acceleration transfers risk to people on foot. There is no alternative to or way to opt out of our deadly roads. We are getting slaughtered and USDOT is subsidizing it. Secretary Pete Buttigieg

Terrible. In 1997, Norm’s wife Rachel Fruchter was killed by a driver while she was bicycling in Prospect Park. Her death spurred the activism that finally led to a car-free park in 2017. Now Norm, 85, has also been struck by a car and killed.

Whenever they tell you a change is impossible, show them Utrecht. An urban freeway with many lanes can become a green park with a beautiful canal. Instead of a car sewer, the water flows.

"What foreign ways of doing things would Americans embrace?" #1 choice at 70% is "All areas in a town or city are by sidewalks, making it easier to walk anywhere" Sad thing is this isn't 'foreign ways'. Our cities used to be more walkable and most desirable places still are.

Fantastic thread showing how car dependency changed our communities, changing how we live. (But that means we can change again!) “When I bought this house I could walk to a grocers, bakers, butchers and newsagent. Now I have to drive to a supermarket, and they call it progress."

Stumbled upon my own example of "things people blamed on bicycles" -- decline in book sales, in June 1896! (Yes... I was researching in the NYTimes archive... and immediately thought of Paul Fairie's masterful threads on this very topic.)

WHO's chief scientist says “the impact of Long Covid is going to be huge. When you’ve had 7 billion people infected, you only have to increase the risk of diabetes, dementia, cardiovascular disease by a tiny % & you’ve got a huge long-term problem" But sure, blame remote work.

The @Twitter blue bird logo is beloved, ubiquitous and has nearly 100% unaided awareness globally, something most brands never come close to achieving. Virtually every newscaster, reporter and byline features the logo, exclusively, giving the brand $$$ millions of free marketing.

When a private citizen can pay $44 billion for a media company — “the world’s town square” — and both crash the civility of the discourse and incinerate 17 years of brand equity within 10 months …. we have too much concentration of wealth in the hands of too few.
