Australia’s Premiers and Chief Ministers committed to reviewing their state and territory liquor laws and sharing best practice and reforms, before National Cabinet reconvenes.

Last week, the Prime Minister and First Ministers of every jurisdiction in Australia acknowledged the role that systems and harmful industries, like alcohol, can play in exacerbating violence. This is an acknowledgement that could not have been imagined four months ago. #auspol

As Kym Valentine, an experienced television/theatre actor and Survivor Advocate said: “For far too long, it has been politically controversial to take action on alcohol – despite the fact that the link between alcohol and violence has always been categorically undeniable."

Kym continued: "For victim survivors and children this is a significant moment. Our real-life experiences can’t be ignored, suppressed or denied any more.”

Just a few weeks ago, every Chief Minister and Premier acknowledged the role systems & industries play in exacerbating violence. They also committed to review their alcohol laws, and their impact on family & domestic violence victims to identify & share best practice & reforms.

This is why FARE has joined more than 200 community leaders & representatives from community, health, Aboriginal & research orgs, to urgently call on the NT Government to halt its plans to remove and relax measures that control the availability and accessibility of alcohol.

We are imploring the NT Government to retain measures such as Minimum Unit Pricing and reduced hours for take-away liquor outlets, which have reduced alcohol-related harm and saved lives across the Northern Territory.
