Because Quebec and Southern California's fire seasons are reversed, the two places struck an innovative deal where LA County leases two big air tankers with pilots & crews from Quebec every fall. They're in the skies above LA now, fighting our fires. Merci, Quebec!

Amphibious 'Super Scooper' airplanes from Quebec, Canada are picking up seawater from the Santa Monica Bay to drop on the Palisades Fire. Great vid from Las Vegas reporter Cristen Drummond.

I'm not a pilot but I have to imagine that you have to be an absolute BADASS to skim the water in what is basically a flying tank, over and over all day long, and do it with the accuracy it takes to scoop up 1,000+ gallons of water and not have an accident. My hat is off to

GENE HACKMAN at his tough-talking best in Mississippi Burning. Apparently he was so perturbed by his own performance that he vowed to not make another violent film again. (He did, though).

I'm getting increasingly convinced that 95.4% of all software engineering problems are because 1) latency is highs and 2) people code like latency is low. Let me get through a couple of examples:

Today, after almost 12 years, is my last day at Cloudflare. I've seen the company grow from 60 to 5,000 people. I helped bootstrap things like DDoS, Spectrum, Cloudchamber, and Egress, and wrote hundreds of internal and dozens of public blog posts. It has been an amazing journey.

1/ A thread about the class dynamics of air-conditioning in Europe. I believe attitudes toward air-conditioning are class markers in many European countries. Air-conditioning is seen as prototypically American, and that's important.
