Among the NBER working papers today is a very nice paper by Tommaso Porzio, Matthew E. Kahn and co-authors, demonstrating the negative health effects of firms’ sorting in high-density areas with visibility/close proximity to consumers.

Great 🧵 by Tommaso Porzio about our new NBER WP! In a nutshell: as SMEs locate in profitable locations by major roads, they also get exposed to high air pollution. Info interventions are not sufficient to protect workers, "Big push" interventions (e.g. industrial parks) may.

Have been a fan of Jeanne Sorin's work since hearing it at our IGC Cities that Work Young Urban Economist Workshop. I think this shows why!

Jeanne is expanding the frontiers of development economics. We understand a lot more about the impediments for road infrastructure projects in the development world because of her insightful paper. Another great candidate this season from UChicago.

Jeanne Sorin is a fantastic JMC from U Chicago this year. Her JMP is absolutely top notch, and I can confirm she is an AMAZING coauthor! Everyone should consider her very very seriously.

Road improvement in Kampala can unlock economic growth by connecting people with jobs and improve welfare by reducing traffic and air pollution, which are major issues in many developing countries cities. Road improvement, however, is often difficult and expensive. 1/
