1/ Our Monday tweet is a little behind with the New year. This one is about the impact of trauma on empathy. There are 2 schools of thought about the impact of trauma on empathy: 1) over responsiveness, in which there is an automatic response to pain and suffering that mirrors…

2/ one’s own and 2) under responsiveness, in which the child is seen as unable to take others’ perspectives or even unfeeling. In reality both are often seen together. However, it is the impact of ‘missed opportunities’ for growth and development that is important here…

3/ the importance of being empathic to the child’s experiences if you like. We know that supporting adult mentalising for the child is key in terms of social development: providing the adult with supports to understand and think about the child’s perspective.

4/ In doing so we are increasing experiences in which the child has a felt sense of being seen, accepted and understood. Repeated cycles of these patterns over time will create new templates and neural pathways #empathy #trauma #recovery #fostercare
