Meet North America’s only venomous mammal, the northern short-tailed shrew. They’re a huge shrew, relatively speaking, that administer venom through large black teeth… must be careful when handling these beasts 🐀🐾

Our new acoustic bird deterrent is now in action at Northwestern University where we’re experimenting with ways to keep migratory birds safe from window collisions during their journeys. 🐦🪟 #BirdProtection #MigrationSafety

It was an honor to host Bette Loiselle at Michigan Tech for an invited lecture focused on her remarkable career. We even enlisted her as an extremely overqualified field tech to help run a banding station during fallout conditions 💯❤️🐦‍⬛🪶

🐦 Excited to teach #ornithology at Michigan Tech in Spring 2024. With the recent AOS decision to change eponymous bird names starting 2024, I'm curious how fellow educators are planning to teach common names during this transition. Any suggestions? #birdnames #AOS

This picture (c. 1899) hints at the scale at which seabird eggs were harvested for food, devastating their populations. Ironically, these eggs went to feed workers harvesting bird guano on other islands, which was a renewable resource - if seabird populations stayed healthy.

One of the most importantly depressing pieces of research we have produced to date: birds in pristine central Amazonian forest are not doing well. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Our research was picked up by The Guardian, alongside work from two of my favorite scientists, John Blake and Bette Loiselle. We hope these findings contribute to solutions that help ensure the persistence of these incredible birds into the 22nd century. theguardian.com/environment/20…
