Being a student, I couldn’t understand: Who was right? Who was wrong? I felt trauma, regret, sadness and sometimes, a strange happiness seeing a few women who had rebuilt their lives with dignity.But most were still stuck in shadows of the war.

There was no uniformity in support. No clear system. No emotional rehabilitation. Policies existed, but their implementation was patchy. The cost of war was still being paid not by the country, but by its veer parivars.

Today, 26 years after Kargil, I want to go back. Back to the same villages. To find out: Have we done better? Have our policies evolved for dependents of our soldiers? Are the promises still alive?

I strongly feel: There must be transparency in disbursement of benefits. There must be equality in treatment regardless of region or rank. There must be emotional rehabilitation not just financial aid.

Because the battle doesn’t end at the border. It continues in the homes of those left behind. And if we truly honour our soldiers, we must protect their families with more than just slogans.

We often speak of Veer Naris the brave widows of our soldiers. But there’s another set of heroes we barely talk about The mothers and fathers who sent their sons to protect us and never got them back. #KargilVijayDiwas #ShaheedParivar

26 years after Kargil, I ask: Have we remembered these parents well enough? Have we supported their old age, their medical needs, their mental health? Have we acknowledged that their grief didn’t end after the funeral?

We owe them more than medals. We owe them regular welfare check-ins. We owe them dignity, emotional support, and continuous respect. Not just on anniversaries. But always.

They raised protectors. They gave the nation their everything. And in return, they deserve more than ceremonial salutes. To every mother and father who lost a child in Kargil India remembers. I remember. And I’ll never stop asking: Are we doing enough?
