#OTD 1918 Major André-Louis Cholesky (b 15 Oct 1875) 🇫🇷was killed in WWI. His matrix decomposition method for solving systems of linear equations was published posthumously. In 1948 Alan Turing demonstrated the stability of the method for large-n machine computations

#OTD 1915 Olive Jean Dunn b (d 12 Jan 2008) USA @AmStatNews Fellow 1968 @AAAS 1965, Professor Biostatistics UCLA; 1974 UCLA Woman of Science. Best known for developing the Bonferroni' (or Dunn) correction for constructing simultaneous confidence intervals 1961.

#OTD 1892 Frank Wilcoxon b (d 18 Nov 1965) 🇺🇸 Best known for his nonparametric rank-sum and signed-rank tests. He was an enthusiastic cyclist but he used a motorcycle to get to work when at Florida State University

#OTD 2014 Edna L Paisano d (b 1 Jan 1948) Nez Perce and Laguna Pueblo. First Native American to work for the US Census Bureau; credited with improving representation of Indigenous communities in the US census through better remediation of systematic undercounts

Happy belated 🎂James Joseph Sylvester (3 Sep 1814-15 Mar 1897) 🇬🇧 Pioneer of graph theory (1878); also modestly claimed to be the Mathematical Adam, coining such well-known terms as matrix, discriminant, canonical form, hessian, latent roots, Jacobian.

#OTD 1947 Founding of the International Biometrics Society, primarily by Chester Bliss. It originated from the ASA @AmStatNews Biometrics Section (1938) in order to provide a home for biologists & applied statisticians.
