Applying for residency? I've read tons of statements over the years, and while I don't claim to be an expert and am early career, there is ONE CONSISTENT AREA FOR IMPROVEMENT that I see time and time again. 🧵 A short thread of unsolicited advice...

Twice now, I've been asked by new interns what AM labs to order for patients, so here is how I think through my standing labs (not saying that this is right, but this is generally what I ask myself when I think about if I need a “routine” lab or not):

Psychiatry is AMAZING and it’s only day 1! One note read: “patient flitted about the ward, not unlike a hummingbird,” is there anything better than a field with notes that great!? #MedTwitter #Psychiatry

Yesterday, our psych patient told us they were making concrete blue jeans out of socks (patent pending) but with one day of adjusted treatment they’re now holding clear conversation without mentioning socks! I LOVE psychiatry!!! 🧠

When you don't know anyone at the conference

Always read the chart: we had a patient who’s left eye didn’t abduct and after a few runs through the oculomotor movements, the patient casually mentioned “you know my left eye is prosthetic, right?” 👀

If I’ve learned only one thing from my Neuro clerkship, it is that you always, ALWAYS confirm that the patient can feel their butthole to rule out cauda equina syndrome 🐎

Do you choose a medical specialty that leaves you more energized or more fulfilled at the end of the day? On the one hand adult psych is fun and I can’t get enough, on the other, child psych makes me feel good and useful #MedTwitter #Psychiatry
