Whenever I sit and talk shop with folks who are really thinking deeply about the family regulation system, it becomes impossible not to see the parallels to the carceral system. Parents' lawyers tend to understand this. Children's lawyers, not as much.

It is, on the whole, a very bad system. It is a system where a parent who pleads for assistance will be ignored until the lack of help becomes acute enough to justify removal. A system where a parent who rehabilitates as required remains without her child for years...
