Svalbard #polarbears may be one of the early populations to disappear. Bears there are part of the Barents Sea population & this area is losing sea ice at a phenomenal rate. I studied the bears there in 1996-2002: a lot of my former study area is no longer polar bear habitat.

The fall refreeze is becoming more widespread across the #Arctic. Late season sea ice losses in the Chukchi and East Siberian Seas have extended the melt season through this week. I will post the total minimum extent numbers within the next few days.
