#OTD 1941, U.S. Navy pilot ENS “Tuck” Smith spotted the Bismarck and then transmitted the German battleship's coordinates. The U.S. was officially neutral at the time but Smith was secretly training RAF pilots to fly PBY Catalina seaplanes. The next day would be Bismarck's last.

#OTD in 1945, FADM Chester Nimitz addressed the crew of HMS King George V to emphasize the vital role of the Royal Navy in winning the war in the Pacific. To further express U.S. appreciation of British efforts, Nimitz gifted the crew with an American ice cream machine.

Happy National Hamburger Day! The term "sliders" originated on U.S. Navy ships where burgers are said to be so greasy that they slide down the gullet. Another theory is that the term refers to burgers sliding on grills as ships pitch and roll. #NationalHamburgerDay

USS Nautilus had a 100 song jukebox with three selector stations similar to those found in diners in the 1950s. The stations were in the wardroom, chief petty officer's lounge, and the crew's mess. Each song cost a nickel, with the money going to the recreation fund. #SubSunday

#OTD in 1940, the Vought F4U Corsair flew for the first time. In 1943, the Corsair and F6F Hellcat (AKA the "Terrible Twins") destroyed 5 enemy planes for every U.S. plane lost. This 1944 photo is of factory-fresh Corsairs and Hellcats being prepared to be shipped to the Pacific.

Remember those who died while serving their country. A Chaplain reads burial services for Marines who died on Saipan and were buried at sea from a troop transport in 1944. Buddies of the dead Leathernecks acted as pall bearers. #MemorialDay

#OTD in 1958, USS Stickleback (SS-415) was holed on her port side in a collision with USS Silverstein (DE-534) near Hawaii. The sub had been going to a safe depth but lost power and broached 200 yards ahead of the destroyer escort. The entire crew was rescued before the sub sank.
