After a break from musicology stuff for a while, I'm going to try and start getting back to writing again. Not like I missed any big news in the meantime though, right?

Unreservedly happy that the sea shanty is trending as a genre. They're always catchy, with a strong beat, and generally within most people's vocal range at any octave. And, of course, the many possibilities for harmonisation!

Very excited to be presenting this talk on the role of Soviet music in modern Russia to the Edinburgh Composers Orchestra this Thursday!

#OnThisDay in 1963 Alexander Gauk, Russian-Soviet composer and conductor, died at 69. He was the teacher of Evgeny Mravinsky, and conducted the world premieres of Shostakovich's 3rd Symphony in 1931, and Khachaturian's Cello Concerto in 1946.

Heading to Vladivostok today, Russia's Pacific port town. A stone's throw from China and Japan, yet in the same country as Moscow! And, interestingly, the birthplace of Yul Brynner. The more you know.
