It's official - I'm writing a book, now under contract w/ Princeton University Press @princetonupress.bsky.s! "The Toll It Takes" will explore how gun violence in the US shapes public health and inequality, written for a broad audience across disciplines. Coming to bookshelves late 2026/early 2027!

Diet & weight loss culture is closely linked to whiteness. But for Black folks, our experiences are often different & complicated. For STAT & Word In Black I was honored to write 14 deeply personal experiences about being Black in the age of Ozempic.🗞 wordinblack.com/2024/05/ozempi…

And in more good news, Colin Carlson and colleagues have created a database of studies on the health impacts of climate change. I challenge anyone to read through these studies and try to deny the reality that we have a climate-health crisis on our hands. healthattribution.org

Well, it's official: Hakai Magazine is ceasing publication at the end of the year because our funding is being cut. I'm incredibly sad for my colleagues, for the freelance community, for the journalism ecosystem as a whole, and for myself. Editing for Hakai has been a dream.

Barely a few weeks into the school year and we already have what appears to be a mass shooting at Apalachee High School. At what point do we stop sending thoughts and prayers and go straight to gun legislation?!? I’m so sick of this shit.

“One gunshot victim was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital” To give folks perspective: that’s a 1.5 hour drive for a gun shot victim to get critical care. The fact there’s nothing closer is a policy choice.

Those brave babies in Georgia had to drag their teacher’s body out from the hallway back into the classroom and barricade themselves inside while waiting for help and also try and perform trauma care. The teacher died right in front of them waiting for help.

14-year-old Mason Schermerhorn was killed at Apalachee High School today. No child should have to worry about going to school and getting shot. We have failed our children. This has to stop. Prayers to Mason's family and friends.

Last year, the student responsible for today’s shooting threatened to kill people at school. Because there wasn’t “probable cause,” the FBI made no arrests. Georgia doesn’t have a red flag law, so police also didn’t remove guns from the 13 year old’s home. wsbtv.com/news/local/bar…
