Aust July building approvals -8.6%mom with private units -12.3%. Approvals are continuing to fall after HomeBuilder pulled demand forward. The lagged earlier surge in building approvals points to strong home building this year, but it could fall sharply next year.

Aust credit data came in stronger than expected in July with housing credit growth remaining strong - particularly for owner occupiers. Monthly housing credit growth is above where it was when APRA started to tighten lending standards in Dec 2014. (Bloomberg table)

Australia’s current account surplus rose to a record $20.5bn in the June qtr (or nearly 4% of GDP). The rise reflected strong commodity prices (notably iron ore) with the terms of trade near record levels but export volumes -3%, import volumes +1.5%. (JP Morgan chart)
