I've never in my life seen the level of destruction as I did on the road from Aleppo to Damascus. Skeletons of houses. Almost no people in sight. Over a decade of war has taken an unimaginable toll. Syrians need our support now and in years to come to rebuild their lives.

Today’s The Lancet john zarocostas underlines that Global maternal mortality rates are stagnating - maternal health should not be slipping down the global political agenda, but it is - inequalities continue to drive barriers to women accessing the care they need to deliver safely.

Another terrible shipwreck in the Mediterranean off the Italian coast. Dozens of people have died, many children. We mourn them and stand in solidarity with the survivors. Time for States to stop arguing and to agree on just, effective, shared measures to avoid more tragedies.

Sobering report: the drought in #Somalia triggered a hunger and health crisis that caused 43 000 excess deaths last year. Humanitarian action may have averted famine but the crisis is far from over. About 135 people still die each day. Support our work: hoa-sahel.who.foundation

NEW: I’m not sure people fully appreciate how dire the US life expectancy / mortality situation has got. My column: enterprise-sharing.ft.com/redeem/75e5e3d… And some utterly damning charts. 1) at *every* point on the income distribution, Americans live shorter lives than the English.
