This is my city Homs (2022). Once the Capital of the Revolution, the newspapers Headlines. But not today. Today it is forgotten...the world moves on, taking your pain from headlines into a footnote.

The Syrian mothers have suffered so much in the last 13 years… their children have been exiled. So much tears from mothers growing old alone, or dying alone. This man is now able to see his beloved mother but many will return to empty homes ❤️‍🩹

Livestreaming from Homs, Syria.... From the New Clock Tower where people gathered inspired by our brothers and sisters in Tahrir Square, Cairo. It is here were civilians were killed: facebook.com/dangerous.m.g/…

Can't stop crying... So much pain, psychologically, and physically that we have been exposed to. For our entire life, we lived in fear; liquid in our blood. And when we had to speak once, we either had to be killed, imprisoned or exiled. Homs is seeing a new history today.

not sure I will be able to sleep... my city, which I have been forcibly displaced from for 13 years is not sleeping. I hear its sounds and feel its pain... Homs, we might meet again. Divided between Oxford and Homs, my body is here but my soul is there.

It’s 2:32 am in Homs, Syria, now and videos keep coming from the city. It all started here in this square, with a humble clock tower that became the symbol of the city, and a symbol of the revolution.

it's 3:15 am here in the UK. We stayed awake waiting for the fall of the dictator.. There is a sea of emotions. So much pain and grief, so much sorrow, for all what we have lost, for every life killed, for every family separated from each other, for our lives ruined. God help us.

It's 4:37 am in Oxford. I couldn't sleep. It is a historical moment. We lived a life where we believed that 'walls have ears'. We were afraid, silenced, and traumatised. But tonight, we are free.

It feels like a surreal dream.... but I wrote few words about the memory of the revolution, about the loss, about our grief... and about a song of the revolution, 'Heaven, heaven heaven. Our homeland is heaven'. For the Financial Times @ft ft.com/content/f79231…

Homs today... My city. A city that turned into the Capital of the Revolution... Half of the neighbourhoods have been heavily destroyed by Assad since 2011. But today, Homs rises again, with its beautiful, kind and generous people.

In the last 13 years, Assad & his allies were not only killing Syrians, but their cities too: domicide. In my city, Homs, over half of the neighbourhoods had been heavily destroyed as collective punishment. I wrote on this in my book, available in paperback from 9 of Jan. #Syria.

Hamza al-Khatib was 13 when he was arrested, tortured & killed in 2011 for being part of anti-gov rally. Earlier this month, his mother got the news that his older brother was killed in prison. "I was thinking maybe he'll come today or tomorrow". bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
