I'm telling you, folks, you've gotta read the 14th Amendment. The whole thing. The "Framers" who wrote it, the ratifiers, weren't messing around. We mostly ignore it, or pretend it isn't as radical as it is. constitution.congress.gov/constitution/a…

Smart point. I'm imagining a spectrum between a) politics as a means of building coalitions within govt (to make law); and b) politics as a means of building an audience outside of govt (to raise money, sell stuff). The very online far-right has moved all the way to (b).

Thoughts and prayers to friends and colleagues who (like me) are prepping to teach classes on American Politics next semester as the Speaker election drags on. At this point I expect a lot of WTF and I'll have to say IDK.

Starting my spring semester Intro to US Politics course, students do seem to be interested in the big picture, the long-term stuff. They get it that a lot of what people mean by "politics" is just soap opera, fun to argue about but not so important.

Across every demographic group, Americans die at younger ages than their counterparts in other wealthy nations. How could this happen? One group of researchers isn't surprised at all. n.pr/3FTHmEW

European football/soccer fans at my dinner table arguing that the lowest performing members of the House should be relegated, replaced by promotion of the best members of their state legislatures.
