Given the shocking announcement of forced closures of supervised consumption sites & needle and syringe distribution programs in Ontario yesterday, here is a thread of what was announced by Minister Jones, with most details pulled from her remarks at AMO youtube.com/watch?v=OB9gX-…

Supervised Consumption Sites save lives, and yet, the Ford Gov announced they will close 10 sites in Ontario, including 5 in Toronto. Tens of thousands of people use these sites and are alive because of them. Tell Ford to reverse this deadly decision: progresstoronto.ca/take-action-sa…

Harm reductionists aren't opposed to treatment; we welcome it. But it isn't a dichotomy: people need both supervised consumption sites to stay alive and accessible treatment options when they're ready. Policy must be rooted in evidence, not ideology. thetrillium.ca/news/municipal…

Homelessness is growing, but programs and supports to address homelessness are shrinking. I will no longer be working at All Saints, unfortunately, but I am far from done with fighting for people's dignity, and their right to housing.

Dozens of housed people in Doug Ford's own riding have died from toxic drugs, where there's no CTS. Many do not have a substance use disorder diagnosis. They won't be candidates for a HART Hub. But they'll continue to die without more publicly-funded harm reduction programs.

Environmentalism has repeatedly been invoked to evict encampments, including under the pretexts of a pollinator garden, tree maintenance, and soil remediation. Great piece from Sam RM on Toronto's greenwashed misanthropy against unhoused people. thelocal.to/weaponized-env…

My latest op-ed in Toronto Sun: Doug Ford is sitting on $54 million for the Canada-Ontario Housing Benefit (COHB), a program that could house 1,500 people in City of Toronto right now. The money's already been allocated, so what is he even waiting for? torontosun.com/opinion/column…

The number of youth dying from toxic drugs tripled in ON from 2014 to 2021. In B.C., OD is the leading cause of death in youth aged 10 to 18. Kids experimenting with drugs — like you did — and who are hurting are falling through gaps we refuse to address. thestar.com/news/gta/ula-c…

Expanding alcohol sales with no plan and closing CTS are borne from the same anti-harm reduction ideology that places industry, e.g., the alcohol industry, above the health and welfare of people who use substances. In both cases, more harm — including more death — will ensue.

I am calling on Doug Ford to release the rent supplement funding so municipalities can move people out of shelter beds and into rental homes. There's no excuse for this inaction on homelessness. #ONpoli

Important piece by Diana Chan McNally urging the provincial gov't to release the $54M in COHB funding owed to Toronto. Despite its flaws, the COHB has proven to help people secure stable housing. Without it, more people remain in shelters or on the streets. torontosun.com/opinion/column…

When a certain type of person with a marginal understanding of civics bleats about "their taxes," usually meaning property taxes, they'll complain about subsidizing education/lunches for "someone else's kids," but say nothing about subsidizing the alcohol industry and 7-Eleven.
