Today, I’m heartbroken as the news is out—Hakai Magazine, a publication I helped launch with my dear friend and colleague judeisabella, is done at the end of 2024. It’s such a shame for my colleagues, freelancers, readers, the science community and much, much more.
I’m so sorry to hear about Hakai Magazine shuttering. Their reporting is delightful to read, I’ve heard writers rave about working with them and - let’s face it - Canadian journalism needs MORE funding, not less. That said, I look forward to what the Hakai team does next!
Devastated by this news. Rigorous, enterprising, and literary, Hakai Magazine is an invaluable member of the science writing ecosystem. I've written some of my favorite pieces for them and recommended them to many fellow freelancers. Surely we can find a way to save Hakai Mag!
It's hard to believe, with all the billions flowing to environmental projects, that the foundation / donor world can't find the funds to sustain this modest, yet effective, journalism project. As Krista Langlois says below: "The core magazine team, myself included, is trying to
One of my career goals was to do science cool enough for Hakai Magazine to cover it. Always wonderful stories. Sad to see this, but they are still looking for ways to fund!
Very few publications treat their writers (and readers) as well as Hakai Magazine. Not going to call this a huge loss, because it's not over yet. But obviously, very tough news. Undying gratitude to the crack team of editors and writers who run this beautiful ship.
1/6 I am sad that Hakai Magazine will cease publication at the end of 2024, but remember—we have some stellar stories coming for the next five months. Also, it’s vital to keep things in perspective.
My heart hurts for Hakai Magazine. Such a loss for gorgeous longform storytelling in Canada. Loved reading your beautiful ocean stories and will read them until publishing officially ceases 💙🌊
hey, that’s me! very grateful for our lovely and generous colleagues Hakai Institute 🫶🏼🫶🏼
I'm devastated to share the news that Hakai Magazine—a dream publication to work and write for, not to mention read—will stop publishing at the end of 2024. But the team is working hard to keep our coastal journalism alive! Sign up for newsletter updates: hakaimagazine.com/newsletter-sig…
I've always put a big emphasis on working with students and new science writers, because I know its a weird, small field that's hard to break into. But I'm blown away by how many people are saying Hakai Magazine was one of the first places that ever gave them a chance
I could not love the team Hakai Magazine more. I love being part of it after being a solitary freelancer for so long. I love the vision, the skills, the kindness, the energy. This is a 100 percent earnest tweet and I don't even care.
The effort to save Hakai Magazine.com is fully underway. So far, we've lined up commitments worth about half of what we need to keep publishing. Ideally, we want one or two more large foundations or donations to give us a solid floor before we throw the doors to reader donations.
When we first learned Hakai was to close, we made it a mission to get everyone on staff the experience they need to best present themselves to the world. This story, by Isabella Kaminski, is also the Hakai news editing debut of copy editor Devon Bidal
