In Xpert-positive TB-patients, we compared the aerosolization of M. tuberculosis between deep breathing, normal breathing, and induced coughing.

We found that, per manoeuvre, coughing released more M. tuberculosis than breathing, however, individuals breathe 22,000 times per day compared to an average of ~460 coughs.

Therefore, we estimate that breathing alone is likely to contribute around 90% of the daily aerosolized M. tuberculosis bacilli.
