Autistic people shouldn't be pawns in a political contest. And if you're going to try and make a political point, it's best to get the facts straight.

Children only get one chance at childhood. It’s not their fault that budgets are squeezed. As the Children's Commissioner for England rightly says today, “Children must not pay the price for balancing budgets.” bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

It is a scandal that children are waiting years for an autism assessment. A diagnosis can be life changing, and in some cases lifesaving. Dame Rachel de Souza highlights “everyday a child waits for support could permanently alter their life course". 1/3 bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

V concerning if gov goes ahead with cuts to disability benefits. This was always just cost-saving. 500,000 disabled people get poorer, v few move to work. Not increasing opportunity or helping anyone. Just hitting a group already facing hunger & hardship. ft.com/content/788873…

Absolutely have to call-out Isobel Oakeshott. To say benefit claimants are 'parasites', sit on the sofa, drive their 'free motability' is completely outrageous. At Scope we call out ableism. Call out discrimination. And to not let language like this go unchecked. Shame.

Since the pandemic, flexible working—an adjustment long advocated by disabled people—has become more common. Empowered Employers is building on this, helping Gloucestershire organisations create inclusive policies, meaningful work opportunities, and remove barriers to employment.

🎉 We are funding Contact to research the challenges faced by disabled children and their families when accessing transport to and from school. They have a survey for parents or carers of disabled children aged 0 to 25 years old: bit.ly/3AzLTg3

It’s #DisabilityPayGapDay The disability pay gap is now 17.2% And that means disabled employees lose out £4,300 per year. And from today disabled people effectively stop earning. We need to change this.

Today is #DisabilityPayGap day. The day when Disabled workers stop getting paid for the rest of the year. Yet, life costs £1,010 more each month for Disabled households than non-disabled households. We are calling on the Government to END the Disability Pay Gap.

Whatever is announced today, your benefits won’t change overnight: 📌 Equality Duty: Govt must assess impact first. 📌 Legitimate Expectation: Courts have ruled sudden cuts unlawful. 📌 Human Rights Act: Cuts must pass a proportionality test. Changes will be challenged+softened.

I know coverage of disability benefits can be very distressing. So, I’ve worked with colleagues to make a range of support visible on The Guardian’s site. If you click on a relevant news story, you’ll see a “drop box” of signposted mental health help as well as benefits advice.

We've joined @Scope [and the Disability Benefits Consortium] to urge the Chancellor to reconsider cuts to disability benefits. We're deeply concerned about the impact for stroke survivors, families and disabled people across the country. Full letter, here: bit.ly/4bSFWcF

FYI: PIP (Personal Independence Payments) is not an out-of-work benefit. It exists to help people pay for the extra costs that come with disability. Cutting disability benefits won’t help people who are already working, and it won’t help people back into work.
