This morning, a pocket of mist in a hollow at 230m beside an observation tower & a newly-dug Turtle Dove drinking pool, frozen over. The iconic bird is at risk of extinction & is getting help here - especially important that they get water in their mating season.

Due to the continued severe windy conditions, Dalby forest is closed today (Sunday 8 December). Our last work task of the year is understandably cancelled. Safety checks will be carried out before reopening.

In Staindale at c130m aod, this afternoon, the sun had not penetrated into the dale & the hard overnight frost remained with a cold mist that created an ethereal landscape.

A smallish turn out compared to some days to a cold, very muddy and physical task at the maze this morning. The tea break could.not have come quick enough. Thanks to everyone who turned out this morning!

This morning, a walk on Adderstone Rigg: a vapour trail in the sky above the corrugated iron-roofed shelter & a look at Rachel Whiteread's 'Nissen Hut' - always a pleasure.

In Dalby Forest, stands the Adder Stone, an impressive monolith of weathered Jurassic sandstone. Softer sedimentary ground surrounding it has been worn away due to glaciation. Nearby, on Staindale Moor (a SSSI) are other similar standing stones, called Bridestones. #geology

This morning's walk was around the arts quarter in Dalby Forest. Rachel Whiteread's 2019 Nissen Hut is being joined by Clearfell House, a new arts building that is now almost finished. A project by M-Arch #architecture students at Central Saint Martins using bio-based materials.

Beautiful morning in a secluded part of the forest at Rosekirkdale SSSI, where we returned for more habitat improvement with ranger Cath. The orchids were in full bloom too.

This morning, headed for the views on the Waitcliff Trail from Bickley Gate in Dalby Forest.

We were clearing regen from an unscheduled section of an historic rabbit warren wall near Newclose Rigg this month & created habitat piles with what was removed. The habitat piles from last summer had settled but now were little pockets of wildflowers amongst the scrub.
